Budding Flavours: Garam Dharam, CP

Bollywood actor Dharmendra succeeded not only in stealing dream girl Hema Malini’s heart, he was also equally liked by most of the girls of his era. His movies, songs, dialogues were an instant hit, in fact, they have become legendary. Being a kid, I still remember my entire family glued to television enjoying Dharam Paaji’s movie. Don’t you think, there should be something special for the actor who is loved by all? Keeping the same thought in mind restaurateur Umang Tewari and Mickey Mehta opened Garam Dharam – Dhaba Te Theka in the heart of Delhi, Connaught Place.

Spread over 4000 sq. ft, the restaurant oozes fun, quirk and lively vibes. You will be mesmerised with a bioscope at the entrance, walls adorning posters of Dharmendra’s popular movies and famous dialogues and dhaba style interiors. The metal cage covering the bar gives the feel of a desi theka and bike bang in the middle of the restaurant reminds of superhit movie Sholay.

Food Talk

After settling in warm, cozy and comfortable Dhaba Te Theka style restaurant, the next thing that captivated the attention was their simple Indian grub that you can find in most of the dhabas. The meal-a-thon started with melt-in-mouth Dahi Ke Kebab. The soft and juicy kebab was a hit on the table. Next came Dharmendra Ki Special Chaap. Crunchy from outside the tandoori chaap was stuffed with potatoes and Indian masalas and then battered with gramflour and deep fired. Tandoori Paneer Tikka was soft and flavourful whereas Pineapple Chaat is for people who prefer their meal to be super spicy.

I opted for refreshing Watermelon and Mint Lassi to wash down the starters. I also tasted their mocktail Khatti Meethi Chulbuli which was served in a pauva. The taste of kokum dominated the flavour in this sweet and spicy drink.

Moving to the mains, Tawa Khumb Masala and fried Aloo Gobhi gets a thumbs up whereas Dal Makhani also would have done the wonders if the salt quotient would have been a bit less.

My appetite suddenly doubled when I saw a plenty of options in the desserts like Gajar Ka Halwa, Gulab Jamun, Firni, Kesar Kheer and Custard. Kesar Kheer, Gulab Jamun and Custard are highly recommended but Gajar Ka Halwa and Firni failed to tease the palate.
